7.       How do we change a direct speech into indirect?

It will be noticed that in Direct Speech, we use inverted commas to mark off the exact words of the speaker. In Indirect Speech we do not use the inverted commas.

It will be further noticed that in changing the above Direct Speech into Indirectspeech, certain changes have been made.

Thus:

i. We have used the conjunction ‘that’ before the Indirect Statement.

ii. The pronoun “I” is changed to “HE”. (The Pronoun is changed in Person)

iii. The verb “am” is changed to “was”.

iv. The adverb “now” is changed to “then”.

Ada beberapa cara membuat indirect speech

1.    Jika reporting verb berbentuk present atau future tense maka reported speech-nya tidak  boleh mengalami perubahan.

Contoh: Agung says that he is late.

2.    Jika reporting verb berbentuk past tense maka reported speech-nya telah mengalami perubahan sebagaimana mestinya (past tense).

a.     Reporting verb berbentuk past tense dan reported verb berupa present tense.

Contoh: Suci said that she was tired.

b.     Reporting verb berbentuk past tense dan reported verb berupa present countinous tense.

Contoh: My mother said that she was going to Yogyakarta.

c.     Reporting verb berbantuk past tense dan reported verb berupa present  perfect tense.

Contoh: The trader said that he had gone.

d.     Reporting verb berbentuk past tense dan reported verb berupa present perfect countinous tense.

Contoh: The traider said that he had been going to Canada.

e.     Reporting verb berbetuk pas tense dan reported verb berupa past tense. Dalam bentuk indirect speech-nya berubah menjadi bentuk past perfect tense.

Sentence (indirect speech) is a sentence which, when reported speech to the main content of words used by the speaker and not the actual words. In indirect speechsentences were associated with the word "that".
Form of the reporting verb is not changed, but the reported speech form should be modified according to the reporting verb forms.

1.    What is direct speech?

Direct speech is quoted speech that is presented without modification, as it might have been uttered by the original speaker.

If the reported speech stated that the actual words, this is called direct speech (directline). Sentences are not connected by "that" it shall be marked with (punctuation) coma.
